The quintessential case in point is “Shallow”which packs one hell of a punch in addition to being another sharply written song. The last time NJ thrashers GOD FORBID checked in with a new album, it precisely the huge step forward that only a few bands ever get—a bold and kickass record that distinguished God Forbid from god forbid earthsblood dime a dozen neo-thrash act and catapulted them into the elite of 21st century metal bands. The Testament references from the last album are in full flow here along with a lot of Jeff Waters inspired riffing which is only a good thing.

The band has had its share of detractors over the years, but no one can say that GOD FORBID has god forbid earthsblood always sought to improve and expand its horizons without abandoning the metallic toughness that has characterized the band’s releases to date. Nearly four years have passed since the release of God Forbid ‘s last album, ‘s post-apocalyptic god forbid earthsblood piece Torbid of Treasonand, at the time, the New Jersey natives ranked just beneath bands such as Killswitch EngageLamb of Godand Shadows Fall in what was then called rather generously the New Wave of American Heavy Metal.
But it is the Coyle brothers’ increased use of clean singing and harmonizing — contrasting perfectly with Byron Davis ‘ bulldog bark — that really sets this one apart from its predecessors.
